How to Live on Purpose: Aligning Your Life with What Truly Matters

For years, I thought I was living a successful life. I had built a thriving business, had a wonderful family, and achieved many of my goals. But deep down, something was missing. I felt like I was just going through the motions—working hard, checking off to-do lists, but never feeling truly fulfilled. I lived for weekends and vacations and just tried to get through each day.

That’s when I realized I wasn’t living on purpose. My life was happening to me, instead of being guided by me. In Level Up Your Life, I share how I took back control and started living intentionally. Now, I want to help you do the same.

Step 1: Define What Matters Most to You

Living on purpose starts with clarity. If you don’t know what matters most to you, it’s easy to fill your days with things that drain your energy or distract you from your true priorities.

Here’s how to get clear:

  • Reflect on Your Values: Take some quiet time to think about what truly matters to you. Is it family, health, creativity, connection, or something else?

  • Imagine Your Best Life: At the end of your life, what do you want to look back on? What will you be proud of? This exercise helped me realize that I wanted to prioritize my relationships and well-being over work hustle.

  • Choose Your MITs: As I teach in the book, your Most Important Things (MITs) are your guiding lights. Write down your top three priorities and make them the foundation of your decisions.

Step 2: Break Free from “Destination Addiction”

I used to think happiness was just around the corner—after I finished a big project, lost the weight, or went on vacation. But as soon as I reached one goal, I’d move on to the next, always chasing a feeling that never came.

This is what I call “destination addiction.” It’s the trap of tying your happiness to a future outcome instead of appreciating the present moment.

Here’s how to break free:

  • Shift Your Mindset: Instead of saying, “I’ll be happy when…,” start looking for joy in your current reality.

  • Celebrate Small Wins: Take time to acknowledge your progress and accomplishments, no matter how small.

  • Practice Gratitude: Each day, write down three things you’re grateful for. Gratitude helps you see the beauty in the life you already have.

Step 3: Align Your Actions with Your Purpose

Once you’re clear on what matters, it’s time to make sure your actions reflect your values. This was a game-changer for me. When I looked at my calendar, I realized it was packed with things that didn’t align with my priorities.

Here’s how to realign:

  • Audit Your Time: Track how you’re spending your time for a week. Are you investing in what matters most, or wasting energy on distractions?

  • Say No to What Doesn’t Serve You: If an activity or commitment doesn’t align with your purpose, let it go. Protect your time and energy for what truly matters.

  • Design Your Days Intentionally: Block out time for your MITs first. For example, I schedule family time, exercise, and journaling before anything else.

Step 4: Embrace the Present Moment

Living on purpose isn’t just about planning for the future—it’s about fully experiencing the here and now. When you’re present, even the simplest moments become meaningful.

Here are some ways to stay grounded in the present:

  • Mindful Mornings: Start your day with a calming ritual, like journaling or meditating.

  • Tech-Free Time: Set aside time each day to unplug and focus on what’s around you.

  • Savor Small Joys: Whether it’s a cup of coffee or a walk in nature, take time to appreciate the little things.

Step 5: Keep Growing and Giving

Living on purpose isn’t a destination—it’s a journey. It’s about continuously growing, learning, and contributing to the world around you.

  • Invest in Personal Growth: Read books, take courses, or learn new skills that excite and challenge you.

  • Give Back: Find ways to contribute to your community or help others. Acts of kindness bring a sense of purpose and connection.

  • Reflect and Adjust: Regularly check in with yourself. Are you living in alignment with your purpose? If not, make small adjustments to get back on track.

You Can Live on Purpose

Living on purpose doesn’t mean every day will be perfect or stress-free. It means knowing what matters most to you and making intentional choices that reflect your values.

You don’t need a big, dramatic life change to start. Just take one small step today—whether it’s identifying your MITs, saying no to a distraction, or savoring a quiet moment.

This is your life. Don’t just get through it—live it with intention, joy, and purpose. Let’s Level Up together.
