Is Your Brain To Blame

Have you not achieved your goal weight?

Your health goal?

Have you not achieved the positive life you desire?

Perhaps, you are focusing on the wrong thing. Perhaps, it is your brain that needs to change. With weight loss, for instance, you keep focusing on what to eat. You focus on eating more veggies, drinking more water and staying away from sugar. But, then you devour that food that you swore to avoid. What gives? It's your brain.

The primary obstacle is a conflict that is built in our brains. Psychologists have discovered that our minds are ruled by two different systems—the rational mind and the emotional mind—that compete for control. The rational mind wants a great beach body; the emotional mind wants that Oreo cookie. The rational mind wants to change something at work; the emotional mind loves the comfort of the existing routine. This tension can doom a change effort—but if it is overcome, change can come quickly.

Your brain stem and cerebellum are often called the reptilian brain, or lizard brain. It's the oldest part of our brain and is responsible for heart rate, breathing, body temperature and balance. It is also responsible for fight or flight.

Your brain has not evolved much. It cannot tell the difference between physical and mental danger. Your thoughts that aren't serving you are fight, flight and freeze thoughts. Your reptilian brain carries out a set of responses form external triggers. It does not learn. An external trigger could be a red light causing you to stop. Or it could be a doughnut causing you to eat it! The reptilian brain evolved to keep your body alive so food is actually a very powerful trigger. The reptilian brain is so strong that it overpowers your conscious thinking brain which has the desire to eat healthy.

So, are we doomed to be at the mercy of our reptile brain? Not at all. You can train your neocortex (your thinking brain). It might not be as sexy as training your abs but it will definitely be more powerful in your life.
