Creating Your Vision for the New Year!

Welcome to Episode 4 of the Motivating Mom podcast. What did you think of that intro? Did you like it better? I got feedback that the first one didn't sound like me. Well it wasn't actually me, but I think they meant that it didn't feel like me. Does that make sense? We'll see if you like this one. Today, we are going to be talking about your vision for 2015. It's that time of the year, time for planning. Or New Years Resolutions as you may call them. I am a huge fan of planning. Without it, I feel like it's too easy just to coast through your life. It happens to you instead of you making it happen. I don't just plan at the end of the year. It's a year long process, but yes it starts now. Think about all of the things you plan in your life. From weddings to vacations, from business to parties. But so few of us actually plan our life. We kind of just let it happen. If you are happy and can say that if today were your last day that you would have no regrets then all the power to you. But if you feel off course. If you feel like you haven't accomplished what you wanted to, then now is the time to start planning your life. So today, we are going to get started.

By now you should already know that I love quotes and will be sharing them regularly with you. Let's start with "A goal without a plan is just a wish". How long have you wished for something? A new job, a certain level of fitness, a better marriage? Let's turn those wishes and dreams in to reality in 2015. Let's talk about why your wishes have maybe not worked in the past. Well, maybe you don't want it bad enough. I mean it would be nice to lose ten pounds but do you want it bad enough that you are willing to forgo the glass of wine at night? Or you want to start your own business, but are you willing to work more than you are now to put the plan together? Maybe we want too much. Or try to change too much at once. 40% of Americans set New Years resolutions. Do you know how many follow through? Only 8%! We all have good intentions but maybe we try to bite off more than we can chew. We choose goals that don't mean enough and then we don't have a plan to make them happen.

I once heard Tony Horton (he's the P90X guy) say that if your goal is to get in shape for a wedding then you better have lot's of weddings lined up in your life. It's time to let go of the vanity resolutions. Consider something bigger. A health resolution that has more meaning, that is tied with passion and purpose for your life. What are 3 things that you would be so happy if you changed one year ago? Here's step one. You can make your long crazy list of all of the self improvement, life improvement things you want, but then I want you to pick just 3. We often make the mistake of choosing things that are important but are not realistic at this stage of life. What season of your life are you in? Is what you want doable and realistic for your season of life? As a mom of a 9 and 13 year old, I can tell you that I now have way more time to focus on myself and my business. I could not do the same things when they were babies. It was a different season of life. So now, let's look again.

What are the 3 Most Important Things (MIT's) you would like to work on this year? Put the rest of the list away. You can save them for next year. Look at your 3 MIT's. How would you feel one year from now if you actually accomplished these things? What would the feeling be? What would it bring to your life? If you are listening to this in your car or on your run, then I encourage you to set aside some time to actually do these activities. I know you have NO time, but maybe you can skip one TV show or wake up early one day and get this done. Before I start the planning of how I'm going to accomplish these things, I create the vision. Yep, you know it, I am one of those people who create vision boards. And this year, I would like you to try it too.

My vision boards literally used to be boards with cut out pictures and words from magazines. But now, with technology, I usually use Pinterest and Power Point to create my vision board. I have them from years back and it's pretty cool to see what inspired me in the past and how that reflects my current life. So, what do you put on a vision board? It's your vision. There are no rules. I had a franchisee who made her vision board and put exactly what she wanted to have in her life from the car to the home. And guess what, she made those things happen?Mine now are a bit more about a feeling, a purpose. What is your purpose this year? What is your why? I'm a HUGE RAVING fan of Simon Sinek's Start With Why. Your life isn't about what you do, it's why you do it. What is your why? Here's a fun activity that I do in my FIT4MOM retreats. If you were to get a tattoo with just one word on it that represented you, what would that word be? Now, pick one word (it might be the same) for this year. In 2014, my word was Be. It was my goal to be more present in the moment. I get very caught up in doing and thinking that I miss the precious moments I'm in. That was a focus for me in 2014 and it has grounded me. On your vision board, write your one word. Write Your WHY. This vision board (or paper) should be a tangible representation of your subconscious desires. It should make you vibrate. it should make you feel good! Don't be afraid to put down your dreams, your desires and your goals. This is not the place to worry about if it's realistic or how you will make it happen. By putting it on your board, it will help you attract what you want in to your life.

Who do you want to be?

Maybe represent the 3 MIT areas of your life which we discussed in episode 1. Cover fitness, family, business, whatever is important to you.Any of these things can be inspired in your vision board. When you look at it, It should make you feel clear and grounded as to the direction that you want to go. The images you pick should have meaning for YOU. Some of the pictures on my vision board might not mean anything to you but I know why I chose them. For instance, there is a woman on my current vision board doing a yoga pose. For me, it's about embracing something that I cannot yet do but my commitment to break down a can't and take it on. It's not that achieving that pose will change anything in my life but knowing that I can learn something new does! Does that make sense? When your vision board is done, do not store it away. It needs to be out and present in your daily life. Where will you look at it every single day? Mine is on the back of my medicine cabinet but yours may be on your desk top or on your fridge. What's most important is that you tap in to that feeling each day. My current vision board has less now of what I want and serves more of a reminder of what I already have. You might want to have pictures of your family or something that reminds you of your already very blessed life. Write the date on it. Save these. They will be a wonderful keepsake and reminder of who you were and your journey. Now I'm not one of those people who believe that you can just create a vision and it will magically happen. I once had an assistant who read The Secret and told me she was visualizing herself making a million dollars. Hate to tell you but it's not going to happen from the wish. Now, we need to plan out out to create the results you want. We need to create the plan. I think that's probably a lot to take in already so that's where I'm going to end today.
