Episode 018 - Getting Out Of A Funk

Last week I was feeling in a bit of a funk. And it occurred to me that I should probably tell you that. I’m not always super charged and positive. I’m human. And we all have up days and down days. But I do have some tips and tricks to help me see the light.

  1. First off, I make note of my cycle. For this particular funk, that was the cause. I’m not sure that enough women are really in tune to their cycle. I just recently started tracking my periods with my moods. Sorry guys who may be listening. But this is the Motivating Mom podcast. After tracking for awhile, I see that I get a dip in mood about a week before my period. Actually, first I get a burst of energy and positivitity. And then it tanks. I want to divorce my husband and leave my kids about 1 - 2 days per month. By realizing that it’s my cycle, I can bite my tongue and prevent family destruction. I am also learning to plan some better me time during this period. I make extra effort to give myself exercise, healthy eating choices and some connection with my girlfriends. Basically, do extra things to make yourself feel good.

You cannot be up all the time. No one is. So if it just happens once in awhile, I suggest you honor it. Give yourself permission to veg out, to not be so productive, to just let it pass. Don’t try to fight so hard.

Now if this funk is lasting a bit too long. And only you can decide what is too long. Here are ten tips to get you out of your slump.

  1. You probably knew that i was going to say this. Exercise. That’s right. Exercise will boost your endorphins and help your energy and mood feel better. If you are in such a slump that you don’t want to exercise, force yourself to do 10 minutes. If you still don’t want to do it, you can stop. But my guess is that you just needed a push.

  2. Get out. Often you just need a change of scenery. Go somewhere that makes you feel good. Get away from what you believe to be stressing you. Go for a walk, to nature, to the mall. Anywhere that gives you a new environment.

  3. Get inspired. Read a book that will motivate you. Or watch a movie that will pump you up. Or read a blog. Or listen to a podcast. Or play music that will boost your mood. The idea is to redirect your brain waves. Right now, you are focused on your slump. You get what you focus on so change your view.

  4. Talk to a friend. For most women, connecting brings a boost of oxytocin. That’s our feel good hormone. Call or go visit with a girlfriend and talk it out.

  5. Cut back. Your slump may be because of overwhelm. Sit down with a piece of paper and write down everything that’s on your mind; everything you believe you have to do. Now, prioritize. What’s most important? What can you do that will have a big impact. Is there anything at all that you can cross of or delegate. Consider saying no to some things that you said yes to. If we can get you out of overwhelm, we can probably get you out of your slump.

  6. Create a vision board. It can be simple. You can even do it on Pinterest. But take some time to create a vision board and focus on what you want in life, where you want to go, what you want to accomplish. This should excite you. Again, it starts redirecting your mind to the positive.

  7. Journal. This is new for me but I am finding it very powerful. I never journaled before for fear of someone reading my words. I was worried that it wouldn’t sound deep enough or smart enough. I now don’t care. I write with zero purpose. Some days might be about what’s on my mind and some days might be a doodle. Some days I write diary style about what’s going on. If you did read it, it would seem quite scattered. I hope if anyone finds it that they do not judge me. It’s just the act of writing that seems to help organize my brain and help me feel better.

  8. Laugh. This one is the hardest for me as I’m kind of serious. But rent a comedy, watch a funny youtube or ask your kids to tell you some jokes. Laugher is so good for us. We should all have a goal to laugh 10 minutes a day.

  9. Surround yourself with positive people. You may have someone in your life who is dragging you down. Maybe quite toxic. Give yourself some distance from them if you can. If you can’t, at least give yourself emotional distance. Don’t let their negativity in. Now, find 5 friends that make you feel good, positive, inspired. They say that you are are the average of the five people you surround yourself with. Choose wisely.

  10. Finally, take care of your health. Make sure you are getting enough sleep, getting exercise and eating well. Those things are essential to how you feel. You need to make some non negotiable standards for your life. For instance, commit to 7 hours sleep, exercise 3 days and getting your veggies in.

If you follow these tips, I’m guessing you will be feeling better in no time. If you feel bad more than you feel good, please consider getting some professional help. Remember, postpartum depression can happen up to years after having your baby. But hormones can change even if your kids are much older. Take it seriously if you just keep feeling blue. It is my hope that I have left you with a little inspiration today.
