Today’s podcast was inspired by an email I received. “Dear Lisa, Thank you for starting the Motivating Mom podcast. I’m enjoying listening. I didn’t want to record my question on your site because I hate the sound of my voice. I also didn’t want to sound like a downer. Lisa, I listen but I’m just not motivated like you are. I don’t know what my passion is or what motivates me. I’m just trying to get through the day. Have you always been like this? Where do you get so inspired? I know you can see my email but please don’t read my name on the air.”
I am so touched by the honesty of this writer. It’s tough to put yourself out there and be vulnerable. Trust me. I know. I’m doing it every day I record for you. First off, I don’t like the sound of my voice either. When I listen back to the podcast, I kind of cringe. But then I think about if I didn’t do this, if I didn’t take this risk, I am missing the opportunity to inspire a whole lot of moms. I have insecurities just like everyone else. I worry when I record or speak about if you don’t like me. Or I sound bad. Or it’s not professional. That little voice in my head isn’t serving me. I have to remember that I don’t have to be perfect. This doesn’t have to be perfect to be good and to serve a need.
So, I thank you for being honest and I thank you because you inspired today’s podcast. I am going to talk to you about my secret. My secret for living an inspired life.
I just told you about my insecurities but now I will overcome that by telling you something very bold. It’s even scary to say because people just don’t say this kind of thing.
I think I am one of the happiest people I know. There. I said it. I don’t know why it’s so arrogant to say something like that. I’m not perfect and my life isn’t perfect. But I am pretty at peace compared to most people I know. I live a pretty darned inspired life. And maybe I’m ok with saying it because I don’t take the credit for it.
My inspired life is not inherently in me. I am not reactive about it. I am proactive about it. And that’s where my secret comes in. But first, let me tell you a little story about how it all got started.
When I was in graduate school, I dated this guy (who will remain nameless for this podcast). He was very successful at a very young age. In his twenties, he already owned multiple fitness studios. He was very confident. When I asked him his secret, he handed over a box of Tony Robbins tapes. I almost fell out of my chair laughing and making fun of him. “Really, you are the person who buys those late night infomercial products? You really fall for that stuff?” When I was done laughing at them, he dared me to listen to every single one and then laugh. I was getting my Masters degree in psychology. What could these tapes have on my education? Well, that’s what surprised me. I was almost instantly hooked. I found these life lessons so powerful, so inspiring. I couldn’t wait to get to the next one. I still today have my notes from when I listened to that original series of tapes.
So, is Tony Robbins my secret weapon? Not really. He just opened the door for me. I started reading and listening to everything I could get my hands on in regards to self development. But it didn’t really take off for me until the last handful of years. There are two things that have transformed my learning and fueled my inspiration. They are...drumroll please… Audible.com and podcasts.
Let’s start with Audible. If you aren’t familiar with it. It’s an online subscription where you can listen to books online. I listen through an iphone app. For the past 5 years, I have listened to at least one book per month. Everyone always asks me when I have time to read. Well, I guess I don’t have a lot of time to read, but I do have time to listen. I listen when I run, when I put my make up on, when I’m in the car. Even a few minutes is enough to inspire me. I am now officially addicted to learning. To growing. My girlfried Carey teases me because I’m always listening to these self help / growth books instead of the lastest novel. But it’s not just self help books. I strive to read (or listen) to things that will grow me. Sometimes things I don’t like. For instance, one month I might listen to a financial book (yuck for me, but much needed), the next about health, the next about parenting, and the next about marriage. I listen a lot about leadership, life and business. Check out last week’s blog post where I shared my book list from 2014 at www.fit4mom.com/blog.
The second thing I listen to are podcasts. I guess you are kind of already getting the podcast thing since you are listening right now. Same as audible, I listen to a variety of topics from social media to nutrition. I probably listen to one podcast per day. There is so much great content out there. Pretty much anything that you want to learn about is being talked about in a podcast.
This is such an amazing time for learning. You know how they say that you are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with. Well, I think that’s what’s picking up my average. I am hanging out with the most amazing people. If you are inspired at all from this podcast, then you kind of get it. I feel like I have a relationship with so many of my mentors. Now this is the hard part for me. I know how precious your time is so I hate to send you to another podcast. But I owe it to the people who inspire me. And I owe it to you to share my passions in this podcast. So here are the ones I listen to most (at this time)...
It just depends on what you are interested in learning. When I listen, I get inspired. When I listen, I grow. So really, I’m telling you that this is very much a big part of how I am proactive about living an inspired life. Just like anything else, don’t feel the need to dive in all the way. Try listening to a podcast each day. Mine is only once a week so that leaves 6 other days to listen. Or sign up for audible and listen to one book per month. Here is an affiliate link where you can have a free trial! Come on, just try it!
