Today was the first day of school for my kids. Hard to believe that I have a 7th and 3rd grader. In the chaos of getting ready, I still sat them down for my usual first day of school speech. First, I asked them how they planned on making this year the best year ever. I remind them that a goal without a plan is just a dream. Then, I reminded them to look out for the new kids and the kids who don't fit in. I remind them that I was that kid who was left out (not to put my "stuff" on them) and all it takes is an invitation to join a game of handball or to sit at lunch that could make someone's entire day.
I hope that my kids are building amazing school memories complete with backpacks and new outfits. But most of all, I hope that they remember that they are that they are the somebody who should step up and be kind, helpful and a friend.
